Galileo Galilei (1564–1642)
Autograph notes on the satellites of Jupiter, 14–25 January 1611

On this scrap of paper (an unfolded envelope), Galileo recorded the positions of four satellites of Jupiter over a period of several nights. He had observed the moons with the aid of his newly constructed telescope and published his findings in his revolutionary book The Starry Messenger (1610). He then worked to define more precisely the periods of the orbits of the Jovian moons, setting up his telescope night after night and making notes such as these. In a radical departure from his university training, Galileo insisted that scientific theory be grounded in observation and physical evidence rather than reliance on ancient authority.

So it turns out that the remains of the cabin from the original 1981 Evil Dead film are in Morristown, TN, which just so happens to be less than 20 minutes from where I live. Today I went with my girlfriend Amanda, my best friend Teajay, and my other friends Maranda and Kimber to visit the site.

Above is my girlfriend Amanda and my best friend Teajay, showing off the trail to the cabin. So we continued on our way and we came across a chimney just sitting in the middle of the woods:

Sadly, this is all that is left of the original cabin. This chimney, some pieces of the tin roof, the foundation, the well, and…

The hole that they dug for the cellar under the cabin in the film (it turns out that the original cabin didn’t have a cellar, so they just dug this hole and put a trapdoor over it. The actual cellar was at a different location). Scattered all around are random, small bits of debris from the cabin, and several dozen trails that lead far back into the mountains. Very easy to get lost. All in all, it was a fantastic trip, but I’m very sad that the cabin is mostly gone. I would have loved to go inside it.

UPDATE: I will be going back to the area sometime this week, and when I do I shall post a more detailed blog with much more pictures, with comparisons to the original film so that everyone can see that they are indeed the same place.

Lisa and Louise Burns were twelve years old when they played the Grady Twins in The Shining. It was the only film appearance for the sisters.

In a June, 2002 issue of JANE magazine, the twins, then 35, recalled running around in the Hedge Maze set, getting lost and forcing crew members to remove panels to let them out. They discussed still owning a pair of the dresses they wore in the film, and Louise recalled, “I got to keep a jar of fake blood. I stored it in the fridge until it congealed.”
