One of many, many reasons to love Gintama -
Sorachi’s portrayal of womenIf I ever meet Sorachi-sensei, I would like to shake his hand and say, thank you so much for creating such memorable female characters. Every single one of them is unique and strong in their own different ways. None of them takes a backseat to the male characters. He turns every female character trope on its head, makes his ladies do unladylike things, pokes fun at the objectification of women and girls in manga, and never goes for convention. And all of them are freakin’ hilarious, and some of them are just freaks.
This is a work without any serious love interests; that’s not the point to the female characters’ existence. However, when he does depict romance, it’s always beautiful and heartbreaking - Mitsuba and Hijikata; Otose, her husband and Jirocho; Kyubei and Tae (yes, it’s still a tale of love and heartbreak); and now, the Keisei Arc. Ever since I read the manga chapters, I’ve been looking forward to this arc being animated, and the scene above made me reaffirm my respect and love for this series.
(One minor note, I slightly prefer the manga storyboard as the scene feels like a real climax as opposed to taking second place to the introduction of Oboro. Also, I tried to make gifs and failed miserably. Maybe somebody who’s more tech savvy can give it a go.)
